Salt licks occur naturally in certain locations in the forest where mineral salts are found on the ground surface. These places are frequented by many animals especially the herbivores. Herbivores need mineral salts for their digestive system. Mineral salts found in salt licks are sodium (Na) and Pottasium (K+).

There are six high hides (bumbun) which were built overlooking salt licks and grassy clearings in Taman Negara : Bumbun Tahan, Bumbun Belau, Bumbun Yong, Bumbun Cegar Anjing, Bumbun Tabing, and Bumbun Kumbang. Bumbun Tahan and Bumbun Cegar Anjing are artificial salt licks.

The others are natural salt licks. You can observe wildlife on the high hide. Chances of seeing wildlife will increase if you head for the hides furthers from Park Headquarters.
