1. TOTALLY PROTECTED WILDLIFE
Totally protected animals include:
- 497 species of birds, including all Hornbills and Eagles, etc.;
- Gibbons, Serows, Pangolins, Flying Squirrels, Tapirs, Clouded
Leopards;
- Nine out of the eleven species of Civet;
- Three species of Monitor Lizard;
- All species totally protected under the international Ciltes
Convention.
Sixty species of Peninsular Malaysia animals and over 80% of the birds (as well
as their eggs and nests) are TOTALLY PROTECTED, under the protection of Wild Life
Act 1972/1976.
* PENALTY: UP TO RM15,000 FINE AND IMPRISONMENT
FOR 10 YEARS.
- It is against the law to buy or sell any totally protected animal or bird,
or any part of a totally protected animal or bird.
- Killing or capturing or keeping any totally protected animal or bird is
against the law.
2. PROTECTED WILDLIFE
* PENALTY: UP TO RM6,000 FINE AND 3 YEARS 6
MONTHS IMPRISONMENT
- for capturing or keeping protected animals or birds without a
licence;
- for hunting them without a hunting licence(a gun licence is not
enough!);
- for hunting outside of the season;
- for exceeding the bag limit.
- Many species of birds and animals are PROTECTED. However,
some of these may be hunted under licence, and others may be kept
as pets if PERMISSION is obtained.
- A hunting licence must be renewed yearly, and details of all kills
must be recorded on the licence.
- Birds which can be hunted under licence at certain times of the year
include Jungle Fowl and White-breasted Waterhen.
- Animals which can be hunted under licence at certain times of the
year include Sambar and Barking Deer.
- Birds which may be kept as pets under licence include Hill Mynas
and White-rumped Shamas.
