The Kelesa is a mouth breeding fish. It has been sought after in Malaysia's rivers as a fighting game fish. It is now considered uncommon or rare in most rivers.


The Kelesa belongs to a primitive group of fishes, most of which are actually long extinct. It can grows to a length of about 60 centimetres and may weigh more than 5 kilograms. It has a prominent ridge and is characterised by its very large and hard scales. It usually has a lighter-coloured belly, but varies in colour from dark, olive-green to gold. The gape of the mouth is large and oblique, with a prominent lower jaw with two black and fleshy barbels on the chin. Its dorsal and anal fins are located close to the tail.
