Local Name : Memerang/ Berang-berang Kecil

Scientific Name : Aonyx Cinerea

Common Name : Oriental Small-Clawed

The Small-clawed Otter may be found in a wide range of habitats where there is permanent water and some tree cover. It is often seen in family groups on the banks of larger rivers and is active by day. The Small-clawed Otter is very good at using its front feet for feeding on molluscs.

The Oriental Small-clawed Otter is the smallest of all otter species, rarely exceeds 75 centimetres from nose to tail, and has a maximum body length of only 46 centimetres. It is dark brown to grey-brown in colour, with paler underparts. The chin, throat and sides of the neck are cream-coloured. The Small-clawed Otter differs from other otters in having only rudimentary claws that do not project beyond the tips of its fingers and toes. The digits of this species are just partially webbed.
